I wanted to share with you one of our regular and more unique visitors to our garden - this beautiful male Pheasant. This is one of Britain's most wide-spread game birds but... it is NOT native to our island. It was introduced from Asia in the Middle Ages.
Miss V-L just loves watching him and says how much his antics remind her of the flock of chickens that we used to have. I agree - he is just like a wild chicken :o) and he has stolen our hearts.
I was very sad to read this little excerpt taken from my 'Readers Digest Wild Britain Garden Birds' book.
"Pheasants are released for shooting and can still be tame during the following winter. They may then enter gardens and take advantage of food put out for other birds, especially seeds. They may reach up, or even flutter onto bird tables to take nuts and scraps."
I do hope that 'our' Pheasant does not end up being shot during hunting season! I am slowly coming to the conclusion that I would make a TERRIBLE farmer. I would have to turn vegetarian for sure ;o)

DeleteShirley Ann, I absolutely adore pheasants!! When Bill and I were first married, we lived in a small rural town, and a pair of pheasants lived in the field just below our road. Very often they would come up the road and right up our hill with their babies in tow - the female "squawking" all along (like she was berating her husband, lol). We called them Philip and Penelope and I have had a soft spot for pheasants ever since. Yours is a beauty!!
